Free JPG to PNG Converter

Convert one JPG or JPEG image to PNG directly in your browser. Pixel dimensions stay unchanged, and changing the format does not restore detail already lost through JPEG compression or remove the background.

How to Convert JPG to PNG Online

  1. Upload a JPG or JPEG image. Choose one image from your computer or mobile device, or drag and drop it into the upload area.
  2. Convert it to PNG. Preview the image, then select Convert to PNG. The conversion runs in your browser.
  3. Download the PNG. Save the converted .png file to your device.

What Changes When JPG Becomes PNG?

This converter changes the file encoding from JPEG to PNG. It does not resize the image, remove the background, or recover image information that was already discarded when the source was saved as JPEG.

PropertyAfter conversionWhat it means
FormatPNGThe downloaded file uses PNG encoding and a .png extension.
New PNG encodingLosslessPNG stores the converted pixel data without JPEG-style lossy compression.
Previous JPEG quality lossDoes not come backJPEG artifacts or detail already lost in the source cannot be reconstructed by format conversion.
Pixel dimensionsUnchangedA 1200 × 800 JPG remains 1200 × 800 pixels in this converter.
TransparencyNot automatically createdThe visible JPG background remains unless it is removed separately.
File sizeMay increasePNG can be considerably larger than a JPEG source, especially for photographs.

Does JPG to PNG Improve Image Quality?

No. PNG is a lossless format, but converting an already-lossy JPG or JPEG to PNG does not restore detail that JPEG compression removed earlier. The new PNG can preserve its current decoded pixels without another JPEG lossy encode, but it cannot recreate a higher-quality original that is no longer there.

Does Converting JPG to PNG Make the Background Transparent?

No. A normal JPG/JPEG image has no alpha transparency, and changing the file format alone does not identify or erase its background. If you need actual transparent pixels, use the Background Remover workflow instead.

When Should You Use PNG Instead of JPG?

PNG is useful when lossless pixel storage matters, but it is not automatically the better format for every image.

SituationPractical choiceWhy
Photographs where smaller file size mattersOften keep JPGJPEG is usually more space-efficient for photographic detail.
Screenshots, text, diagrams or sharp graphicsPNG can be usefulFor future saves, lossless PNG avoids adding more JPEG compression artifacts around sharp edges and text.
Repeated future editingPNG can be usefulKeeping later saves in PNG avoids introducing another JPEG lossy re-encode.
Actual transparency neededRemove/edit background firstFormat conversion alone does not create transparent pixels.
Exact KB requirementUse the Image CompressorA format change cannot guarantee an exact file-size target.
Different width or height neededUse the Image ResizerThis JPG-to-PNG converter keeps the original pixel dimensions.

JPG and JPEG Are the Same Image Format

JPG and JPEG are two common filename extensions for the same JPEG image format. This converter accepts both .jpg and .jpegimages and downloads the result as PNG. Both filename extensions work in the same conversion flow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I convert both JPG and JPEG files to PNG?

Yes. The uploader accepts JPG/JPEG images, and the converted download uses PNG format.

Does converting JPG to PNG improve image quality?

No. PNG stores the converted pixels losslessly, but it cannot restore details or remove artifacts already lost through JPEG compression.

Will the background become transparent after conversion?

No. JPG-to-PNG conversion changes the file format only. For actual transparency, use the Background Remover.

Will the pixel dimensions change when I convert JPEG to PNG?

No. This converter keeps the decoded image width and height unchanged. Use the Image Resizer if you need different dimensions.

Why can the converted PNG be larger than the JPG?

JPEG uses lossy compression that is efficient for photographs, while PNG stores pixel data losslessly. Because of that difference, a converted PNG can require substantially more storage.

Can this converter make the PNG an exact KB size?

No. This page changes JPG/JPEG to PNG; it does not target an exact file size. For a KB or MB limit, use the Image Compressor.
