How to Remove a Background from an Image

Check the Edges Before You Download
Automatic removal is a starting point, not a guarantee that every edge will be perfect. Zoom in and check places where the subject blends into the background or contains very small details.

- fingers, straps and thin object edges
- soft, blurred or low-contrast boundaries
- busy backgrounds with similar colors
- small holes or gaps inside the subject

When Automatic Removal Needs Manual Correction
If background remains around the subject, or automatic removal cuts away part of the subject, open Retouch. The editor gives you two direct correction tools.

Individual strands and soft edges can contain a mix of subject and background pixels. Check these areas closely and use a smaller, softer brush if correction is needed.
Glass and semi-transparent objects
Transparent and reflective objects are harder because the original background may still be visible through them. Automatic removal may simplify or lose part of these areas, so review the result before downloading.
Similar foreground and background colors
When subject and background have very similar colors or weak contrast, the boundary can be harder to separate. Manual Restore is useful if part of the subject disappears.
What Happens to Shadows?
Shadows sit between foreground detail and background, so the automatic result can remove them, keep part of them, or soften them depending on the image. Check the cutout against the background you plan to use rather than assuming every original shadow should remain.

For a Cleaner Cutout
- Start with an image where the main subject is visible and reasonably sharp.
- Inspect hair, fur, fingers, thin straps and other small details at a closer zoom.
- Use Restore when automatic removal cuts into the subject; use Erase when background remains.
- Be especially careful with transparent objects, motion blur and low-contrast edges.
- Check the final PNG over a light and dark background if edge quality matters.
